What Christians Really Believe

I just came across what appears to be a very innovative and helpful website: www.leestrobel.com. Of course, this is a website by Lee Strobel, author of multiple books on Christian Apologetics, including The Case for Christ and The Case for the Creator. The site is full of video clips and other resources for those who have a desire to investigate the claims of Christianity. (HT: Mark D Roberts)

Hi Barry:
A mild note of caution on a deeply important issue: it’s not quite correct to attribute to Lee Strobel’s site “What Christians really believe.” He cannot speak for all Christians… nor, frankly, to the truth in some cases. I’m not trying to start a sectarian brawl—just projecting the real situation. While much of what Lee presents is edifying and correct, there are other issues which are deeply, critically important with which most Christians would disagree. The “umbrella” concept is that Strobel is not an authoritative interpreter of the Scriptures, nor does he recognize the importance of Tradition (II Thess 2:15, 3:6) and the initially unwritten Deposit of Faith (John 21:25).
For example, I’d be willing to bet Strobel’s interpretation and understanding of John 6:48-61 are out of line with a plain reading of the text—let alone authoritative doctrinal teaching of the Catholic Church—the pillar and foundation of truth (I Tim 3:15). When you bring in I Cor 11:27-29; Luke 22:19, and Matt 26:26-29… and add to that centuries of prayer and discernment, the title of your post comes under question. There is also, of course, the unjustifiable doctrine known as sola Scriptura which a great many Christians view as heretical.
Again, I’m not trying to pick a fight: we can discuss these issues separately for a long, long time in a civil manner. I’m just asking for a little more care when generalizations are made.

Thanks for your comments. Certainly, there is a lot of diversity in “what Christians believe”. I’m sure Strobel is not the authoritative voice for all Christians. I am not familiar enough with his stances on all issues to say I agree with all of his views. On the other hand, I have read some of his books and have found them quite helpful as apologetics tools and also well written and informative. My generalization was not meant to endorse Strobel as the final arbiter of “what Christians believe”. Actually, the reason I chose that title blurb was that it was a phrase used in the title of his website. Thanks for making your point though.
